It was a dramatic opening of the Berlin Film Festival Thursday night after topless protestors jumped over the barriers and onto the red carpet. The young women dared to bare – despite the snow – with political slogans painted on their bodies.

The FEMEN activists crashed the 63rd film festival to protest against widespread female circumcision in Africa. They claim that one girl is circumcised “every 19 minutes”. FEMEN are Ukrainian ‘Sextremists’ who staged their demonstration on the United Nation’s international day against female genital mutilation.
None of the young protestors succeeded in entering the venue or were caught by the television cameras as security acted swiftly in removing them from the scene. Afterwards they reported that they were treated rightfully and were not taking to a police station.
Since its origin in 2008, FEMEN has become known for its signature topless protests, and the feminist group have recently opened new headquarters in Paris.
